Everyone produces waste, and the Swedes are no different. It’s what they do with it that is unusual. Sweden recycles and sorts its waste so efficiently that less than 1 percent ends up in landfills. But perhaps even more interesting, and somewhat controversial, is that Sweden burns about as much household waste as it recycles, over 2 million tons, and converts this to energy. How much do you know about steel and the steel industry in Sweden? In this film you can learn about steel, what it is used for and how the steel industry in Sweden contributes to shaping a better future. Steel is everywhere in society and is used for everything from scissors to reinforcement of concrete. Items which do not contain steel are often produced using steel moulds or shaped with steel tools. Steel is an alloy containing mainly iron, which is the fourth most common element in the earth's crust, and carbon. Modern steel grades often contain other alloying elements. The choice of elements, and the amount used, depends on the properties required from the steel. Our society is completely dependent on steel. So it is not surprising that more steel is used as the population and ...

The Danish company VIPP (famous for its iconic 1939 wastebasket, now in the MOMA) has created a prefab tiny home designed down to the last detail (flashlight included). Their 592-square-foot “plug and play getaway” wasn’t designed to blend into nature, but to float above it; fifty thousand pounds of glass and steel serve as a frame for the surrounding landscape. VIPP designer Morten Bo Jensen explains that the shelter wasn’t designed as a piece of architecture, but an industrial object. The prefab structure is built in a factory and the four modules are transported by truck to the site. The shelter can be constructed in 3 to 5 days using just bolts for the modules and 9,000 screws for the steel plates. The small prefab can house 4 people: 2 on a daybed and 2 in a loft bedroom. Here are 10 things Swedes do better than Americans. Sweden has given the world a lot to be happy about, from Absolut vodka to the supergroup Abba, but they’re also at the forefront of more serious matters, like the environment, industry, and the business of living.   Here are 10 things Swedes do better than most, particularly Americans.   Number 10. Recycle. Of all of the trash the nation’s 9 and a half million or so citizens produce, only 1 percent of it winds up in dumps. The rest of it is recycled in various ways for a number of purposes, among which is the production of energy.  Number 9. Stand in line. Swedes are able to, and quite often do, wait in one without pushing, cutting, or trying to sneak around it. Thanks to a variety of highly developed take-a-number systems, they can also do it without giving any indication that they’re queued up at all.   Number 8. Balance work and life. According to the most recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the people of Sweden are among the best in the world when it comes to divvying up their time in a way that’s most personally satisfying.    Number 7. Glassblowing. In southern Sweden is a place known as the Kingdom of Crystal, which is home to Orrefors and Kosta Boda as well as about a dozen other makers. The area also draws a lot of tourists as it offers boutiques, galleries and outlet stores as well as the opportunity to enjoy a drink at a bar made entirely of glass.    Number 6.  Live longer for less. According 2011 figures released by the OECD, the average life expectancy in Sweden is just under 82 years, which makes them the world’s 8th most enduring humans. The nation’s per capital health expenditure is about 4 thousand dollars.  Number 5. High style, low prices. IKEA, which has become synonymous with well-priced, stylish home goods, has expanded greatly over the years and is now world’s number 1 furniture store. H&M, which has done for fashion what IKEA has for décor, is the planet’s 2nd largest apparel retailer.    Number 4. Parental Leave. Not only does Sweden offer a generous paid duration of it, the perk is gender-neutral, meaning fathers can spend time with their newborns, too, without sacrificing much income.     Number 3. Happiness. Sweden is the world’s 5th most joy-filled country, based on the United NationsWorld Happiness Report 2013. The rankings were determined based on how residents feel about their lives overall, not just their mood at the moment.   Number 2. Treating the elderly well. Swedes came in first place in the UN’s Global AgeWatch Index. Factors considered included health provisions, income, and environment.    Number 1. Sustainability. The Nordic nation gets top marks in this category as well, earning the distinction of being the ‘most sustainable country in the world’ according to a 2013 report by a Swiss investment group. Among the strengths that secured it the highest spot are a commitment to renewable energy sources and notably low CO2 emissions.  What do you think Sweden does best?

Instead they dispose the rubbish on landfills. In Europe alone we dispose around 140-million tons of household waste each year. That is enough to cover the entire country of Switzerland with a 10-centimetre layer of rubbish. It is better if we can use some of this waste in our incinerators here because then we get both heating for our houses and electricity out of it." 20. In general, the best thing would be if the rubbish were taken care of in the country where it originated. Because of there was no option to send it to another country there would be more of an incentive to recycle and reuse the rubbish. Another problem is that this means high emissions of dangerous substances here in Sweden. We know that rubbish burning causes the release of dioxin for example and this is a very dangerous substance." Stockholm - 15 November 2012 26. Crane lifting rubbish 27. That is why we have practically stopped disposing waste on landfills here in Sweden. This has been possible because of the incinerator plants. These plants are today extremely environmentally friendly, there are several layers of purification which means that we in principle remove all heavy metals and make sure they never make it out to the environment." 30. http://www.democracynow.org - While Sweden is known as the birthplace of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Peace Prize, many do not realize it is also one of the world's largest arms manufacturers. Sweden is in fact the third largest arms exporter per capita after Israel and Russia. Swedish company, Saab, makes more than 50 percent of the weapons the country exports. While the Swedish government often takes a neutral position in international conflicts and offers assistance through peacekeeping missions and foreign aid, it has continued to send military equipment to regimes accused of human rights abuses, including Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Bahrain and Egypt. We speak with two guests: peace activist Martin Smedjeback, who has served three prison sentences for breaking into weapons factories and hammering on weapons meant for export, and with Anna Ek, president of Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society, the world's oldest peace organization. Ek says that while Sweden signed the global Arms Trade Treaty earlier this year, it has resisted incorporating anti-corruption provisions into the country's own laws. A possible ban by the EU on lobster imports has the US and Canadian lobster industries bracing for a fight with the European Union. The discovery of 32 American lobsters in Swedish waters over recent years sparked the conflict. The Scandinavian country called for a ban on imports of the shellfish, claiming they could spread disease and overwhelm native species. The American lobster industry has countered that Sweden's goal is not about science, but business- protecting markets for European lobsters. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-04-11-US-European-Lobster-Ban/id-872c1557ec7245ab9f85e9d24cf166e5 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

So it is not surprising that more steel is used as the population and the standard of living increases.

The floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide open and closed with mechanical rollers, designed to move the 400 or 500-kilo doors with ease. “We kind of like this idea that you just grab it and slide it open,” explains Jensen, “instead of motorized solutions that would be more different from our philosophy of very mechanical products that just last for a long time.” https://www.vipp.com/en/shelter/the-vipp-shelter/ Original story: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/vipp-shelter-tiny-prefab-as-precise-industrial-era-appliance/
